Cornell University

The Cornell University AI for Science Institute (CUAISci) is part of the Radical Collaborations Initiative on AI. One of the initiative’s core AI application impact areas is scientific discovery, and sustainability is also an overarching goal.

Research Themes

AI for science themes include materials discovery, physics, biological sciences, and sustainability sciences. Synergies across themes include quantum physics, biophysics, climate and ecosystems, and sustainable materials.
Synergies across AI for science themes

Focused on AI for scientific discovery, CUAISci is organized around broad research themes, initially including these:

  • AI for materials discovery
  • AI for physics
  • AI for the biological sciences
  • AI for the sustainability sciences

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

A major component of CUAISci is the Cornell Schmidt Sciences AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, which will support about 20 postdoctoral fellows annually. Cornell is one of the initial nine universities participating in the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship, a program of Schmidt Sciences.

AI for Sustainability Initiative

The Cornell AI for Sustainability Initiative (CAISI), a core part of CUAISci, applies AI to address global sustainability challenges, focusing on decarbonizing energy and agri-food systems. CAISI advances leading research, innovation, and education in AI for Sustainability, working to address essential energy, food, and climate issues on scales from sustainable materials discovery to the broader energy-food-climate nexus.
